Blackthorns Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, has proudly launched its very own in-house post office, creating a meaningful and practical new feature that allows residents to post letters to their loved ones from the home.
The initiative, which took place on 20 January 2026, was developed to support residents’ independence, routine, and emotional wellbeing, offering them a familiar and comforting activity that many have enjoyed throughout their lives.
The idea was inspired by residents who expressed a wish to visit the local post office to send their letters. With the Halstead post office now closed, the team at Blackthorns decided to bring this important community service directly into the home.
Staff and residents worked together to create the post office, ensuring it feels welcoming, accessible and meaningful for everyone involved. Residents can now write letters to family and friends, post them within the home, and trust that staff will ensure they are sent on their journey.
A resident shared:
“We love knowing that we have a post office in the home and that we can post letters to our loved ones.”
The atmosphere around the new post office has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents expressing excitement and pride in being able to post their own letters within the home.
This initiative reflects Blackthorns’ commitment to person-centred care, promoting independence, maintaining meaningful routines, and supporting strong emotional connections with loved ones.
