Freda and Jack, residents of Liberty House care home, part of the Runwood Homes group, share a love story filled with laughter, partnership and lifelong devotion. The couple first met as teenagers, aged 17 and 18, and married in 1940 when Freda was 21, and Jack was 22.
Their marriage has always been marked by warmth, humour and deep affection. Jack’s mother famously told him on their wedding day, ‘’You have found a good one in Freda’’, words that proved true throughout their life together.
Laughter is a constant companion in their marriage. Freda fondly recalls riding a tandem bicycle together, explaining that when she became tired, she would simply lift her feet and let Jack do all the pedalling. Even on their wedding day, humour took centre stage when Jack accidentally kicked something over in the registry office, creating a loud crash that left Freda unable to stop laughing.
Their shared adventures extended well beyond family life. For a time, the couple ran a pig farm with thousands of pigs, embracing the challenges of rural life together. They also shared a passion for ballroom dancing, travelling far and wide, and winning competitions along the way. Jack even had a collection of his own, specially chosen dancing ties.
When asked to describe Jack in just three words, Freda says: “Gentle, kind, loving gentleman.”
Now, residents of Liberty House care home, Freda and Jack, continue to inspire those around them with their beautiful bond and joyful memories.
