Bramwell Care Home Wins First Place in Runwood Homes Dementia Champion Competition 2026

Caldwell Grange 9

Bramwell Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, has proudly been awarded first place in the Runwood Homes’ Dementia Champion Competition 2026, launched during Dementia Action Week.

The award recognises Bramwell’s outstanding commitment to delivering compassionate, person-led support for people living with dementia and highlights the exceptional work of the home’s Dementia Champions and wider care team.

Supported by Home Manager, Mable, Bramwell has created a warm, inclusive, and understanding environment where residents are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. The home’s philosophy centres around recognising every resident as an individual with their own life story, strengths, memories, and abilities.

The Dementia Champions at Bramwell take an active leadership role within the home, sharing dementia care tips, values, and best practices with colleagues daily. They support new team members through dementia awareness sessions designed to improve understanding of how dementia can affect communication, memory, emotions, and behaviour. These practical and interactive sessions help staff develop empathy, confidence, and a deeper understanding of person-centred care.

A key focus at Bramwell Care Home is meaningful engagement and inclusion. Residents are supported to participate in everyday activities around the home, including preparing breakfast, setting tables, watering plants, and helping with light household tasks. These familiar routines help maintain independence, identity, and a sense of purpose while encouraging social interaction and connection.

Creative and therapeutic activities also play an important role in daily life at Bramwell. One successful initiative involved residents participating in a garden bench painting project, restoring and decorating outdoor furniture together. The activity encouraged creativity, teamwork, sensory stimulation, and conversation, while giving residents pride in contributing positively to their home environment.

The home has developed a strong culture of learning, teamwork, and reflection. Staff are encouraged to look beyond behaviours and ask, “What might this person be trying to tell us?” helping shift care from task-focused routines to truly compassionate, person-centred support.

Environmental improvements across the home further support residents living with dementia. Bramwell has created calm, familiar, and easy-to-navigate spaces using clear signage, memory prompts, familiar objects, and comfortable communal areas to reduce confusion and promote independence.

Dementia awareness sessions are also delivered for both staff and families, helping to strengthen understanding and create a supportive community around residents.

Runwood Homes praised Bramwell for its outstanding dedication to improving the lives of people living with dementia and for creating a culture where every resident is seen, heard, and valued as an individual.
