Residents at The Mill House Care Home part of the Runwood Homes Group, enjoyed a heartwarming and memorable experience as part of the Runwood Group’s February dignity theme, “All Creatures Great and Small.” The home welcomed Kate, an experienced animal keeper, along with a wonderful selection of exotic animals for residents to meet up close.

Throughout the day, residents, visitors and staff had the opportunity to meet a fascinating range of animals. The first introduction was Autumn the Leaf Insect. After learning that Autumn is female, resident Elizabeth delightedly responded, “That’s even better!”

When introduced to a green bean stick insect, Wendy described it as a “Gorgeous little thing.” The arrival of Holly the Parrot sparked particular excitement. Geoff warmly greeted her with, “You’re beautiful.” As Kate explained how Holly’s colourful wings can be seen when she flies, Elizabeth admired the “brilliant, beautiful colours” before introducing herself playfully with, “Hello noisy noisy.” Susie added simply, “You made my day.”

Residents also met Audrey the guinea pig and learned about her sister Pamela, prompting Susie to joke, “Is that like Coronation Street Audrey?” Geoff once again shared his affection, saying, “You’re lovely aren’t you.” Wendy commented, “Lovely, warm and gorgeous — I would like two of you between my pillows at night all snuggled up keeping me warm.” Janet described the animals as “so soft,” while Elizabeth reflected, “I am lucky aren’t I?”

A highlight of the visit was meeting Peppy the Skunk, described by residents as “soft and fluffy.” Daisy ensured that residents who were cared for in bed were not left out, personally accompanying Kate around the home so everyone had the opportunity to meet Peppy.

The experience provided powerful tactile and sensory stimulation, touching hearts and evoking memories of childhood pets. Sue shared fondly, “We used to have loads of guinea pigs,” while others reminisced about cats and dogs they had owned. Residents were deeply engaged, asking thoughtful questions as Kate explained the animals’ habitats, diets, origins and ages.

The atmosphere throughout the day was described as gentle and calm, yet playful and positive. A particularly special moment came when Kate entrusted resident Susie to hold Holly the Parrot on her forearm after she asked calmly and confidently. Susie later stood by the drive, warmly waving Kate and the animals off as they departed.
