On Tuesday, 24th September, residents at Windmill House care home, part of the Runwood Homes group, enjoyed a pleasant walk into Wymondham Town Centre for their ‘Tools Down’ initiative. The outing gave residents the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air, as the weather was perfect for a short stroll. During the walk, they visited Myhills Pet Store, where the birds on display sparked fond memories among the residents. They chatted about their past experiences with pet birds, and it was suggested how lovely it would be to have a bird at the home.

Upon returning, the idea was shared with Windmill Houses home’s manager, who embraced it enthusiastically. That same day, a residents daughter, Shelagh, saw a Facebook post about the outing. She was thrilled to see her mother out and about, and, knowing how much a bird would bring joy to both her mum and the other residents, Shelagh generously offered to donate a birdcage and a budgie.

True to her word, Shelagh arrived later that day with the new pet budgie. Coincidentally, pupils from Browick Road Primary School were visiting Windmill House at the time. Residents suggested names for the bird, and a pupil pulled the winning name, ‘Billie,’ from a hat. The joy and excitement of the residents was palpable, as Billie instantly became a beloved part of the Windmill House family.

Billie the Budgie has quickly brought smiles and comfort to everyone, offering a new source of companionship. This event involved not only the residents but also staff members Carlie, Jayne (Administrators), and Steph (Laundry Assistant), as well as pupils from Browick Road Primary School, whose visit made the occasion even more special.

The ‘Tools Down’ initiative is essential for allowing staff to engage more closely with residents, listen to their preferences, and create meaningful experiences. The residents were deeply grateful for this outing, which not only provided a change of scenery but also led to the heartwarming addition of Billie to the home.

“Who knew that a little local walk in our town would turn into such a magical moment for our residents? Seeing the joy and interaction many of the residents had with our new family member, ‘Billie,’ was heartwarming. It really shows how lucky Windmill House is to have an amazing team of residents, relatives, staff, and visitors,” said Carlie, Administrator at Windmill House.

Billie’s arrival has brought a new sense of joy to the residents, making this simple outing a treasured moment for everyone at Windmill House.
