Greenbanks Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, celebrated the festive season in exceptional style on 23 December 2025 by hosting a Special Classical Christmas Concert, bringing world-class music, community spirit and festive generosity together for a truly special morning.
The concert was a wonderful way to close the year, offering residents an opportunity to experience live classical music of the highest calibre while celebrating the joy and togetherness of the Christmas season.
The concert featured an outstanding performance by Matthew Wing, a first violinist with the Royal Opera House. Born in Watford into a family of professional musicians, Matthew’s impressive career has taken him from studying at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music to performing internationally. His achievements include touring Japan with the Royal Opera House, performing at Buckingham Palace for King Charles’s 70th birthday celebrations, and regular appearances with leading orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Residents were captivated by the performance, which included a rich variety of pieces ranging from slow, emotive melodies to fast, spirited compositions that perfectly captured the Christmas spirit. Resident David shared his appreciation, saying:
“Matthew’s violin playing was absolutely beautiful. It captured the Christmas spirit perfectly. That was a gorgeous performance, thank you for such a special moment.”
The event was further enhanced by the attendance of Watford County Councillor Mark Watkin, who presented Greenbanks’ Employee of the Month awards and demonstrated his continued support for the home by generously donating £300 towards Christmas presents for residents.
The atmosphere in the Sun Lounge was described as uplifting and joyful, filled with world-class artistry and a strong sense of community. One standout moment came w

hen Matthew performed a series of elegant, waltz-style pieces, transforming the lounge into an impromptu ballroom. Staff and residents paired up to dance, creating scenes of laughter, movement and genuine connection.
Adding a unique and personal touch to the occasion, resident artist Eric spent the concert sketching the musicians and dancers, capturing the harmony between the music and those enjoying it. His artwork provided a lasting reminder of a truly special festive event.
The Classical Christmas Concert highlighted the importance of meaningful cultural experiences at Greenbanks, strengthening community connections and creating special moments for residents during the festive season.
