Heron Court Care Home, part of Runwood Homes Group, is proud to recognise the remarkable kindness and ongoing commitment of Malcolm, a long-standing volunteer whose connection with the home began over five years ago. His unwavering support has made a profound impact on residents and staff alike.
Shannon, administrator at Heron Court, commented:
“We wanted to share this story as Malcolm is a great person with a very big heart.”
Malcolm first became involved with Heron Court in 2020, during the three years his partner of more than 20 years, Patsy, resided at the home. Throughout her stay, Malcolm was a daily presence, joining her for lunch and tea, taking part in activities, attending events, and supporting her, and others, in every way possible. His involvement extended far beyond this, as he quickly became an active and valued member of the wider Heron Court community.
Following Patsy’s passing in 2023, Malcolm continued to visit the home regularly, offering comfort, companionship, and practical help to residents and staff. He frequently assists during mealtimes, accompanies residents who feel unsettled, and provides emotional support with patience and compassion. His calming influence has been especially appreciated when residents express a desire to leave the home, Malcolm is often the one who gently reassures them with a walk or conversation.
His contributions have been recognised multiple times through Heron Court’s “Employee of the Month” award, honours he receives with great gratitude and humility.
For Malcolm, Heron Court is more than a place he volunteers as it is, in his own words, his “second family.” He even chooses to spend Christmas Day at the home, sharing the holiday with residents and staff who cherish his presence.
During a recent interview reflecting on his experiences, Malcolm became emotional as he spoke about Patsy and the memories connected to Heron Court. Despite the bittersweet feelings, he expressed that continuing to volunteer is deeply important to him, as he never wants to let the community down.
Malcolm’s arrival is a source of joy for residents every time he walks through the door. His generosity of spirit and commitment to others embody the very best of community care.
Heron Court staff agree: Malcolm is not just a volunteer, he is part of what makes the home special.
