At Heron Court Care Home, part of Runwood Homes Group, residents, staff, and family members have come together in a creative and light-hearted celebration of a significant moment in British history, the attempted Gunpowder Plot led by Guy Fawkes.
Inspired by the wider community, Lifestyle Coordinator Ariel Da Costa shared how the initiative began:
“Throughout the town, we’ve seen members of our community make scarecrows and place them along the roadside. So, we decided to do the same.”
The project, which started last week with preparing the staging of the scarecrows, involved a collaborative effort between Heron Court staff, residents, and relatives who even donated the hay used in the creations.
Using a mix of hay, old clothing, plastic, paint, and masks, the team brought several scarecrow characters to life, proudly displayed at the front of Heron Court. The creative process sparked a joyful and humorous atmosphere.
“None of us has a PhD in Arts,” Ariel laughed, “so trial and error was a major part of the project, which only added to the fun.”
The activity connected Heron Court to a local tradition within the wider community and reflects Heron Court’s ongoing efforts to build stronger connections.
The display serves as both a tribute to the historic events of November 5th and a symbol of community traditions, blending remembrance with creativity and inclusion.
