Heron Court Care Home, part of Runwood Homes Group, is delighted to share the positive impact of a very special weekly visitor who has been brightening the lives of residents over the past four months.
Every Tuesday, Luna, a friendly and affectionate cockapoo, arrives at our residential home alongside her owners to spend time with residents. Her visits have quickly become a much-anticipated highlight of the week, filling the home with warmth, excitement and renewed energy.
The initiative has created a welcoming and friendly atmosphere throughout the home. From the moment Luna walks through the front door, there is a noticeable buzz of excitement among residents and staff alike.
Speaking about the visits, Ariel, Lifestyle Coordinator at Heron Court, said:
“You often hear residents say, ‘What a friendly dog,’ but in this case it’s more important to see their reactions than hear their words. Watching the return of their zest for life is truly priceless. I’m just a witness to something very special.”
Luna’s calm and trustworthy nature helps create an environment where residents feel relaxed and confident. Her presence has encouraged increased social interaction and meaningful engagement among many residents.
For example, one resident who would usually prefer to spend much of his time in his room watching films, undergoes a remarkable transformation when Luna arrives. He becomes animated and full of vitality.
Similarly, two residents who would typically sit quietly next to one another, reading or watching television, now come together in conversation when Luna is present. With Luna at the centre, they form a circle and begin chatting enthusiastically, using the dog as a bridge to connect and share stories.
Luna’s visits have demonstrated the powerful role that animal companionship can play in enhancing wellbeing, encouraging communication and strengthening community spirit within care settings.
Heron Court looks forward to continuing these heartwarming Tuesday visits and witnessing many more special moments in the weeks and months to come.
