Residents at Jubilee Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, recently embarked on an imaginative and culturally enriching “armchair travel” experience, transporting them to the vibrant country of Zimbabwe through decorations, food and travel experience.

The idea originated from residents’ curiosity about life in different countries and was further inspired by care staff member, Precious, who generously shared her personal experiences of Zimbabwe and offered to prepare traditional cuisine.

To create an authentic travel atmosphere, residents worked together to design and build their very own aeroplane. The adventure included handmade passports and boarding passes, a suitcase hunt, and even a “passport control” and “duty-free” experience before boarding. Many residents enthusiastically arrived with their own suitcases, adding to the sense of anticipation and excitement.

Upon their “arrival” in Zimbabwe, residents enjoyed delicious traditional dishes prepared by Precious, providing a genuine taste of the country’s rich culture. The event also offered educational insights into Zimbabwe’s iconic landmarks and experiences, including the majestic Victoria Falls, often referred to as “The Smoke That Thunders”, as well as sunset cruises and the thrill of bungee jumping.

A standout moment of the event was the imaginative recreation of Victoria Falls, where residents delighted in watching the “smoke that thunders,” followed by a pretend walk to their hotel in beautiful Zimbabwean weather.

The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with joy and curiosity. The experience not only provided entertainment but also promoted cultural awareness, reminiscence, and social interaction among residents.

This event highlights Jubilee Court’s commitment to delivering meaningful, person-centred activities that enrich residents’ lives and create a strong sense of community.
