Residents from Silvanna Court Care Home, part of Runwood Homes Group, recently enjoyed a truly memorable day out as they boarded a specially arranged wartime-themed river cruise to commemorate D-Day. The event combined celebration, reflection, and a heartfelt moment where one of the residents’ wish was fulfilled.
The trip, part of the home’s “May on the Waterways” theme, aligned perfectly with the D-Day anniversary and created an opportunity to bring history to life for the residents. Among those who joined the outing was Dennis Buxley, a former Navy serviceman, whose personal wish to be back on the water was made a reality.
“Thank you ever so much for making my wish come true,” Dennis shared with a smile. “I’ve not been on a boat for a very long time, and seeing as I used to be in the Navy, you can imagine just how thrilled I am, a perfect way to celebrate D-Day.”
Residents began the day with a riverside lunch before boarding the Victoria canal boat at Papermill Lock. The boat was decorated with British flag-themed table settings, and the cruise featured a lively selection of wartime songs, traditional sausage rolls, and a drinks bar. Everyone danced, sang along, and enjoyed the serene views from the deck.
Joining the group were Akin, one of Silvanna Court’s dedicated one-to-one staff, and care team member Laila. The compassion and energy of the team did not go unnoticed. A member of the public who witnessed the event later wrote in to express their admiration for the staff’s dedication and warmth.
Leah, who is a Lifestyle Coordinator at Silvanna Court Care Home, noted that fulfilling wishes like Dennis’s brings a deep sense of purpose to the work they do. “Wishes are important, they give residents something incredibly special to look forward to and provide memories they’ll hold onto forever.”
The atmosphere throughout the cruise was described as nostalgic, celebratory, and profoundly moving. As Dennis stood smiling on the deck, surrounded by nature and music, it was clear this was more than just a day out, it was a moment of honour and personal joy.
