On Tuesday 21st May, the halls of Brewster House Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, were filled with music, laughter, and joy as the talented choir from St Francis Catholic Primary School visited to perform for residents. The children, aged ten and eleven, not only sang beautifully but also recited heartfelt poetry, creating a truly memorable afternoon for everyone involved.
The idea for the visit was born during one of Brewster House‘s dementia champion meetings, where they discussed the positive effects music can have on individuals living with dementia. A resident fondly recalled how much joy children singing once brought, and from that moment, the plan was set in motion.
Leoni Kempen, Brewster House‘s lifestyle coordinator, reached out to the school to organise the visit. “It was lovely to see everyone smiling,” said Leoni. “The children really brought so much energy to a wet afternoon.”
The event was met with overwhelming appreciation. Resident Beryl shared, “It was amazing and brought back so many memories from when my children were in school.” The atmosphere was described as “extremely happy,” with many smiles and even a few tears of joy.
One unforgettable moment came when the children sang a lively ABBA song — residents couldn’t help but sing along, dance, and share their gratitude with the young performers.
These intergenerational moments are incredibly valuable. Music, memory, and community connection all played a part in making this event such a success. Brewster House are incredibly grateful to the students and staff of St Francis Catholic Primary School for taking the time to brighten their day.
