Tallis House Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, experienced a truly special festive moment this Christmas thanks to the kindness and community spirit of nearby Hillhouse Primary School.
Commenting on the occasion, Rachel Brownlie and Clare Sambrook, Lifestyle Coordinators at Tallis House, shared how a simple daily routine blossomed into a deeply moving Christmas surprise. Tallis House is located next to Hillhouse School, whose children regularly use the neighbouring field for walks and PE lessons. One resident, John, has formed a lovely connection with the pupils and teachers, waving to them daily from his bedroom window, a moment he looks forward to each morning.
One student from Hillhouse School explained just how special this connection has become, saying:
“He is so nice and always waves at us at his bedroom window when we are out on the fields.”
On the morning of 17 December, at around 9:30am, the Head Teacher of Hillhouse School organised a surprise for John. An entire class gathered on the field outside Tallis House to sing Christmas carols, proudly holding a large handmade banner reading “Merry Christmas John.” The children’s excitement was infectious as they sang and waved, filling the air with festive cheer.
John was completely astonished by the gesture and visibly moved, with happy tears in his eyes as he watched the children sing especially for him. Following the carols, the Head Teacher and two pupils visited Tallis House to personally present John with the banner, which he has since displayed proudly in his room.
The atmosphere throughout the event was joyful, lively and full of excitement, perfectly capturing the spirit of Christmas and community togetherness. The standout moment for all involved was seeing John’s surprised and emotional reaction, a powerful reminder of how meaningful simple acts of kindness can be.
Events like this highlight the importance of staying connected with the local community and spreading joy in residents’ lives. Tallis House is proud to share such a beautiful example of friendship across generations, made possible through the thoughtful actions of Hillhouse School and its pupils.
