Residents from Rosedale Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, enjoyed a memorable and heartwarming day out with a special bus trip to Romford Greyhound Stadium, a venue filled with fond memories for many.
The trip was organised by Louise, Lifestyle Lead, alongside Claire from the Lifestyle Team at Rosedale Court, after residents frequently shared stories about their experiences at “Romford Dogs” over the years.
Louise explained the inspiration behind the outing:
“Our residents have often spoken about Romford Dog Stadium and growing up around the surrounding areas. Many have such fond memories of going to the races with family and friends. When they said how much fun it would be to go again, we knew we had to make it happen.”
Travelling by minibus through familiar streets where many residents once lived, the group enjoyed a scenic and nostalgic journey before arriving at the stadium. Once there, they spent the afternoon cheering on their chosen dogs, placing friendly 50p bets, and soaking up the lively atmosphere.
A traditional lunch of pie, mash and liquor was delivered to the group, which proved to be one of the highlights of the day. Residents also enjoyed refreshments from the bar and warmly engaged with members of the wider community and stadium staff.
Residents were delighted to share their reflections:
Lillian said,
“I used to love coming to Romford Dogs with my dad.”
Charlie added,
“I’ve had some great times up here years ago with friends.”
Marion commented,
“I love watching the dogs race.”
Steve said,
“It’s been a good day and the sun is shining.”
Bobby summed up the experience with,
“Fab, Fab, Fab.”
John was equally impressed with the catering, saying,
“The pie and mash is lovely.”
Members of the wider community also praised the initiative, commenting,
“It’s so lovely to see you bring residents here.”
The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with laughter, excitement and friendly competition, as residents cheered enthusiastically for their favourites. The arrival of the traditional pie and mash was described as a truly delightful moment.
The outing not only provided a fun and engaging experience but also reconnected residents with cherished memories of their younger years, reinforcing Rosedale Court’s commitment to meaningful activities that celebrate residents’ life stories and local heritage.
