Blackthorns Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, was filled with laughter, warmth and the delicious smell of freshly made pancakes as residents and staff came together to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.
Residents and staff rolled up their sleeves to bake pancakes from scratch, choosing from a variety of favourite toppings including chocolate spread, jam, and the traditional lemon juice and sugar. The activity was inspired by residents themselves, who made pancakes in the kitchen last year and requested to take a more hands-on role this time.
The celebration sparked joy and reminiscence throughout the home. Residents commented that the activity “brought us lovely memories” and said it “was lovely to be able to make pancakes.”
The atmosphere was full of smiles and conversation, with everyone enjoying not only the sweet treats but also the shared experience. While there were no single standout moments, the highlight was undoubtedly the collective enjoyment and sense of togetherness felt across the home.
At Blackthorns, celebrating Shrove Tuesday is about much more than making pancakes. Events like this promote wellbeing, dignity, inclusion and meaningful engagement. By encouraging residents to actively participate, the home supports independence, social connection and positive mental health.
Blackthorns remains committed to creating enriching experiences that celebrate tradition, encourage participation and bring joy to daily life.
