Every other Tuesday, Windmill House Care Home in Wymondham, part of the Runwood Homes Group, welcomes a lively group of pupils from the neighbouring Browick Road Infant School for a special garden group activity, bringing together two generations through shared love for nature. On 15th October, the children joined residents to plant tulip and daffodil bulbs and fill bird feeders, transforming the garden into a cheerful, collaborative space.
The partnership, led by Windmill House’s Lifestyle Coordinator and supported by Browick Road Infant School’s Forest School tutor and classroom assistant, has grown to be much more than a garden group. It’s a meaningful opportunity for pupils to learn about gardening and wildlife directly from residents, some of whom have lifelong experience as commercial market gardeners. The activity has fostered close bonds between residents and the children, who look forward to each session, building friendships that have become the heart of this initiative.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Fran Annis, Lifestyle Coordinator at Windmill House’, shared: “It has been an absolute privilege to be part of this wonderful partnership between the school garden group and our residents. It’s grown beyond gardening, creating friendships that are truly special to witness.”
At the end of the summer term, Windmill House residents were invited to visit the children’s allotments, participating in a judging day led by the Wymondham In Bloom competition judges. In recognition of their contributions, residents were presented with Browick Road garden club badges, symbolising their valued role in helping the pupils develop both gardening skills and confidence.
This ongoing collaboration between Windmill House and Browick Road Infant School is a beautiful example of community spirit and intergenerational learning, with the garden flourishing as much as the friendships that have blossomed within it.
