Windle Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, was honoured to welcome a very special visitor on Thursday 29th May: Baloo, the retired Essex Police dog and recent recipient of The Hero Dog Award at Crufts 2025.
Baloo captivated residents and staff alike with her gentle nature and inspiring story.
After sustaining severe injuries in 2018 while on duty, Baloo has transformed her experience into a mission of healing and connection. Alongside her owner, Mandy Chapman, she now visits schools, care homes, and community groups, offering comfort and support.
During her visit to Windle Court, Baloo made her way through the home, taking time to greet residents both in communal areas and in the comfort of their rooms. She was the perfect guest – lively and full of charm, yet incredibly gentle and calm with everyone she met. Staff were equally smitten, their faces lighting up as Baloo went through the corridors, spreading joy wherever she went.
Residents couldn’t hide their delight as they spent time with Baloo, wholeheartedly agreeing with her owner Mandy, who said, ‘Whatever you believe in, she was put here to spread joy.'”
Baloo’s journey from a dedicated police dog to a symbol of hope and resilience continues to inspire many. Her story underscores the importance of compassion, determination, and the unbreakable bond between humans and animals.
