Heron Court care home, part of Runwood Homes group, is delighted to announce its latest initiative, HeronAirways, a virtual flight experience designed to bring a touch of adventure to its residents. On 28th of August, at 11:00 AM, Heron Court residents adventured to the vibrant and sun-drenched lands of Espania.
In a creative effort to engage and uplift its residents, Heron Court transformed their premises into a virtual airline. The admin team, Lifestyle Coordinator, and Home Manager worked diligently to create an immersive experience, complete with custom-made passports, boarding passes, and hi-vis jackets to illustrate emergency exits. The use of a projector set the scene for an unforgettable travel experience.
Residents were warmly welcomed by the airline staff, who guided them to their seats arranged in rows of two. In a thoughtful nod to real airline procedures, the ‘air stewardess’ demonstrated the safety exits, ensuring everyone felt secure and informed throughout the flight.
Upon ‘landing’ in sunny Spain, each resident was treated to a serving of paella, a dish that had been specifically requested in recent catering surveys. This culinary touch brought a piece of Spain directly to the residents’ tables and was met with immense joy.
The virtual flight proved to be a particularly meaningful experience for those residents who have not travelled abroad in over 20 years. The smiles on their faces reflected the success of this initiative.
One resident shared, “I have been craving paella for 20 years, and I am so happy you have done this for me!” Christine, a family member, commented, “You really have lit up all of their lives; you all go above and beyond, and I can’t wait to see the outcome in the press.” Another resident said, “I am thrilled to have taken part in your new airline adventure.” Mary, a resident, added with humour, “I’m a nervous flyer, so stay with me!”
Heron Court care home is thrilled with the positive feedback and hopes that the community enjoys reading about this trial run as much as they enjoyed creating it.
