At Longview Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, Volunteer Appreciation Week provided the perfect opportunity to honour one of their most dedicated volunteers, Jan. On Tuesday 3rd June, staff and residents came together to surprise Jan with a heartfelt gesture of thanks for her unwavering commitment and compassionate presence in our home.
Jan’s journey with Longview began in September 2022, when her beloved mother moved into the home. Following her mother’s passing in January 2023, Jan felt drawn to give back to the community that had supported her and her family. Her personal experience with dementia, having cared for both of her parents, has shaped the empathy and understanding she brings to her voluntary role.
Since joining as a volunteer, Jan has become a cherished member of the Longview family. She regularly supports the lifestyle team, accompanies residents on outings, assists with activities like nail painting, and is always ready with a listening ear and a warm cup of tea.
In her own words, Jan shared: “I love listening to the residents talk about life, their hobbies, their families. They seem to enjoy talking about these things, and I find it so rewarding for myself as well. I hope for the time I’m there I bring a little bit of joy to the lovely residents at Longview.”
To show Longview‘s appreciation, Jan was presented with thoughtful gifts by the staff and residents. The atmosphere was one of joy and gratitude, and a touching highlight was seeing Jan visibly moved and tearful as she received her tokens of thanks.
