Spring was in full swing at The Mill House Care Home part of the Runwood Homes Group, as residents and staff came together to take part in a creative and nature-focused group activity — making handmade bird feeders.
The session was a beautiful blend of creativity, connection, and care for the natural world. Residents were joined by kitchen and care staff in crafting the feeders, which were then hung on trees and bushes in the garden. In the days that followed, everyone enjoyed birdwatching from the conservatory, spotting a variety of feathered visitors making the most of the tasty treats on offer.
“We enjoyed making the bird feeders and being able to watch the birds enjoying them once we had hung them outside in the garden,” said Emma.
The idea was inspired by research into seasonal activities that support sensory stimulation and appreciation for nature. With many residents enjoying the peaceful garden and conservatory space at The Mill House, the project was a perfect fit.
The atmosphere during the activity was filled with creativity and excitement, and one particular highlight was the delight of seeing the very first birds enjoy the fruits of their labour.
This simple yet meaningful activity provided not only an opportunity to care for local wildlife but also offered a sense of pride, joy, and shared experience for all involved — a lovely reminder of the power of nature to bring people together.
