Residents from Redbond Lodge Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, including two centenarians, enjoyed an unforgettable day of history and heritage at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, following a special request from one of the residents.

The visit brought together residents George (101), Kitty (100), Peter, and Eddie, accompanied by dedicated staff members. The group explored historic aircraft, military vehicles, and even met with war veterans who were amazed by the stories and longevity of the visiting residents.

George, who served in the Tank Regiment during his time in the Army, was a particular highlight for museum staff, who hoped he could see the Churchill Tank, a vehicle he was once associated. Unfortunately, the tank was located in a hangar and is currently under repair. Still, the team ensured the residents experienced as much as possible, including the thrill of watching a Spitfire take off and land; a moment that was described as “extra special.”

Kitty, a lifelong aviation enthusiast who has even piloted planes in her younger years, was especially moved by the visit. “The scale of the aircraft was unbelievable,” she shared. “Watching them fly again brought so many memories back.”

“This trip was more than a day out,” said Karen Briggs. “It was a journey through personal and national history. To see George and Kitty at 101 and 100 years old so engaged and energised by the experience was truly heartwarming.”

The warm atmosphere, friendly staff, and the sheer scale of historical exhibits made this visit an unforgettable one for all involved. The event was inspired by a simple resident request, but it turned into a celebration of resilience, memory, and legacy.
