Brewster House Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, is delighted to celebrate a heartwarming resident-led fundraising initiative titled “Hats by Hazel”, in which resident Hazel Richards has been lovingly handcrafting knitted hats to raise money for the home’s amenities fund.
The idea began during a conversation between residents and the activities team about different ways to support fundraising within the home. Hazel expressed her desire to contribute through knitting, a skill she has cherished for many years.
Resident Hazel Richards shared:
“I was talking to the activities staff about fundraising and said I would love to make hats to sell like I used to do. We have had lots of fun making them, I hope people enjoy them.”
Hazel began knitting the hats over the summer with support from Lifestyle Coordinator Leoni and volunteer knitter Hillary. The hats are now available to purchase for £5 each, with every penny raised going directly to the residents’ amenities fund at Brewster House.
Residents have enjoyed watching the hats being made, often trying them on as part of the fun, while staff, families, nurses, and friends have shown their support by purchasing hats or donating wool.
The team emphasised how meaningful it is for residents to play an active role in fundraising:
It is so important to include residents in fundraising, the proceeds directly benefit them. Hazel shared that staying busy and helpful means a great deal to her, and this project has truly allowed her to shine.
The atmosphere throughout the initiative has been warm, lively, and full of conversation with Hazel often sharing stories while she knits, creating moments enjoyed by all.
“Hats by Hazel” stands as a lovely example of creativity, community spirit, and resident empowerment at Brewster House.
