Residents and team members at Bracebridge Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, came together on 8th May 2026 for a VE Day celebration filled with music, laughter and reflection.

The home was transformed with colourful Union Jack bunting, patriotic hats and festive decorations, recreating the atmosphere of the wartime street parties that marked Victory in Europe Day 81 years ago. Residents, relatives and staff joined together throughout the afternoon to celebrate and remember such an important moment in history.

Entertainment was provided by Andrew from Musical Moments, who performed a selection of wartime favourites including Hang Out the Washing on the Siegfried Line and the ever-emotional We’ll Meet Again. Residents enthusiastically sang along, waved scarves, played musical instruments and even treated guests to ukulele performances, creating an energetic and joyful atmosphere throughout the home.

Following the entertainment, residents enjoyed a traditional cream tea with freshly baked scones, clotted cream and jam, before gathering in the dining room where beautifully decorated tables recreated the charm of a wartime street party. Guests were treated to sandwiches and a buffet-style feast enjoyed together in the spirit of friendship and community.

Residents were moved by the occasion. Mary commented:

“These songs bring back so many memories.”

Another resident described the event as:

“It was such an amazing feeling of relief, sadness and happiness all rolled into one.”

The event was inspired by the team’s desire to create something more interactive and engaging than a traditional performance, encouraging resident participation through music, dancing and shared celebration.

Standout moments from the afternoon included residents playing the ukulele, families joining the festivities and seeing residents who would not normally engage in group activities come together and enjoy the occasion.

The VE Day celebration at Bracebridge Court was a touching tribute to an important chapter in history and a wonderful afternoon filled with nostalgia, joy and community spirit.
