Residents at Blackthorns care home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, were treated to a truly memorable and heartwarming experience on Wednesday 5th August, when six adorable pygmy goats paid a special visit to the home.
The unique animal therapy session gave residents the opportunity to cuddle, stroke and spend time with the friendly goats, creating smiles, laughter and unforgettable moments throughout the day. The visit was enjoyed by both residents and staff, many of whom described the experience as incredibly moving.
The event was organised to bring the outside world into the home and provide a calming sensory experience for residents, particularly those who have a love of animals. The benefits were clear to see, with one resident, who does not usually participate in group activities, joining in and beaming with the biggest smile throughout the visit.
Residents particularly loved cuddling with the pygmy goats, with many continuing to talk about the visit long after it had ended. Seeing the joy on residents’ faces and hearing everyone reminiscing about the experience the following day was a highlight for the team.
Animal-assisted activities are a valued part of life at Blackthorns, helping to promote wellbeing, encourage social interaction and create meaningful moments. The pygmy goat visit was another wonderful example of how bringing nature and animals into the home can have a lasting positive impact on residents.
