Bramwell Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, proudly celebrated the 80th Anniversary of VE Day on Thursday 8th May , marking a significant milestone in history for both its residents and the wider community. The event was attended by two Army officers from Chetwynd Barracks, who marched alongside the residents in a heartfelt and moving tribute to the heroes of the Second World War.
The residents at Bramwell have vivid memories of the Second World War, so the importance of honouring the brave soldiers who sacrificed so much was key. The visit from the officers was a wonderful way to commemorate the end of the war and bring back those memories in a shared moment of reflection.
One resident shared, “It was an excellent VE Day celebration. Credit to the Army, well organised.”
The event took place in the morning, with the officers marching and engaging with the residents, creating an atmosphere of respect, pride, and nostalgia. Many of the residents, who lived through the Second World War, relished the opportunity to reconnect with a part of their history and reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers.
The idea for this event came after discussions with residents and their families. One of the families of a resident works at Chetwynd Barracks, and they graciously agreed to bring soldiers to join the celebration. This gesture helped make the 80th VE Day anniversary even more special for the Bramwell community.
At Bramwell, the VE Day celebrations serve as an essential reminder of the past and an opportunity to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom. The event allowed them to honour that history and celebrate it with the residents, who hold these memories dear.
