Residents, visitors, and staff at Longview care home, part of the Runwood Homes group, enjoyed a wild and wonderful day of animal encounters as they celebrated the 100th birthday of David Attenborough on 8 May 2026.
The event was organised after residents chose during a meeting to mark Sir David Attenborough’s milestone birthday with a nature-themed experience. To bring the celebration to Longview, the team invited The Animal Club to the home, giving residents the opportunity to meet and handle a variety of fascinating creatures up close.
Animals visiting the home included giant land snails, a horned frog, a millipede, a leopard gecko, a royal python, and a long-haired guinea pig that quickly became a firm favourite among residents.
Jessica from the lifestyle team said the event created a unique experience for everyone involved, allowing residents to try something new in a calm and relaxed setting. Ambient jungle music and nature scenes displayed on televisions throughout the home helped create an immersive atmosphere for the occasion.
Resident Beryl F shared her excitement following the experience, saying: “That was such a great experience, I didn’t think I would be holding a royal python today!”
One of the standout moments of the day came when residents were amazed by the guinea pig’s exceptionally long hair, with several joking that it looked like a wig. Animal ranger Fearne then revealed the guinea pig’s nickname was “Wiggy,” much to everyone’s amusement.
The event brought smiles, laughter, and curiosity throughout the day, while also celebrating the life and legacy of one of Britain’s most beloved natural historians.
