Residents and staff from the Runwood Homes Group care homes came together at Chelmsford Cathedral for a heartwarming afternoon of music, singing and community as part of Dementia Action Week.

Residents from Heron Court, The Grange and Madelayne Court attended the annual “Singing for the Brain” event, organised in conjunction with Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness of dementia and promote the benefits of music for people living with the condition.

The event was also attended by 10 mayors from across the region, who joined residents, families and community partners in supporting the initiative and showing their commitment to dementia awareness.

Joining residents for the special occasion was Kieun, Associate Director of Dementia and Wellbeing at Runwood Homes, who spent the afternoon supporting residents and celebrating the positive impact that music and shared experiences can have on wellbeing.

Residents travelled to the cathedral via the homes’ minibuses, with Madelayne Court proudly bringing two minibuses to accommodate residents and their very own choir singing group, who enthusiastically participated throughout the event.

The cathedral was filled with familiar songs, smiles and laughter as residents joined together in singing sessions designed to encourage reminiscence, communication and connection. The “Singing for the Brain” initiative is widely recognised for helping people living with dementia to express themselves, build confidence and enjoy meaningful social interaction through music.

Runwood Homes continues to champion dementia-friendly initiatives across its homes, ensuring residents are provided with enriching experiences that support both emotional wellbeing and social connection.
