Africa day at Lower Meadow-Care Home celebrating unity and diversity

Lower Meadow Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, celebrated Africa Day with fervour and joy on the 24th of May. The occasion, marking the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25th of May, 1963, resonated deeply with staff, residents, and visitors alike as they came together to honour Africa’s rich culture, history, and achievements.

The celebration was a vibrant display of unity and diversity, as staff and residents adorned themselves in traditional African attire, showcasing a variety of colours and patterns. A highlight of the day was a captivating fashion show, where the beauty of African garments was on full display, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among attendees.

Traditional African games were enjoyed by all, evoking nostalgia and laughter. The rhythmic beats of African music filled the air as staff performed an energetic dance to ‘Waka Waka’ and Bob Marley ‘One Love’, captivating the audience with their exuberance and skill.

Culinary delights took centre stage as traditional African foods delighted the taste buds of all present. From savoury stews to mouthwatering desserts, the flavours of Africa transported guests on a gastronomic journey, fostering a deeper appreciation for the continent’s culinary heritage.

Rachel Walker, Home Manager at Lower Meadow, expressed her pride in the diverse and inclusive community fostered at the care home. “At Lower Meadow, we celebrate the richness of our cultural tapestry, embracing diversity and learning from one another. Africa Day is a testament to the bonds we share as a family, united in our appreciation for different cultures and traditions.”

Favourite Shoniwa, a Care Assistant at Lower Meadow, reflected on the significance of celebrating Africa Day in a foreign land. “As Africans living abroad, we carry the spirit of Africa wherever we go, embodying its values of hard work, kindness, and generosity. We are grateful to the Lower Meadow management team for providing us with the opportunity to celebrate our heritage among cherished friends. Happy Africa Day to all!”
