Redbond Lodge Marks 80th Anniversary of VE Day with Community Celebration

Residents, families, and team members from Redbond Lodge Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, proudly took part in a celebration on Thursday 8th May to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The event, organised by Great Dunmow Town Council, was held at Talberds Ley, a local park, and brought together people from across the community in a vibrant display of remembrance and unity.

Redbond Lodge residents came prepared with a picnic, wine, squash, Union Jack hats, and flags to wave during the celebration. The British Legion made a special visit to speak with residents and present each one with a commemorative VE Day 80th anniversary badge — a gesture that was deeply appreciated.

The event was rich in community spirit, with locals joining Redbond Lodge’s tables to share their memories of wartime life. A range of groups participated, including soldiers from Carver Barracks who brought military vehicles for display, and the Town Crier, who officially opened the celebration by reading an invitation from Buckingham Palace. Representatives from the police and fire service were also in attendance.

Redbond Lodge residents embraced the day’s events. They tucked into delicious tea and cakes and enjoyed the Pimms and Prosecco tent, all whilst listening to live music by The Rockabellas, whose wartime hits had everyone singing, waving flags, and dancing.

The event offered an opportunity for Redbond Lodge’s residents to connect with the wider community, reminisce about the past, and celebrate the resilience of those who lived and served through the war. It was a moving and unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
