Eastham Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group,  is celebrating the outstanding success of an innovative physiotherapy programme that has delivered remarkable improvements in resident mobility, wellbeing, and safety over the past six months.

The programme was led by Reef Cowell, a qualified physiotherapist and PT instructor from Reeflex Mind and Motion, who volunteered his time to deliver a pioneering 12-week pilot programme at Eastham Care Home . Reef attended twice weekly to provide physio-led strengthening sessions for a group of residents, with a focus on reducing falls, improving mobility, and increasing confidence and independence.

Following comprehensive personal assessments conducted at the start and end of the pilot, the results demonstrated exceptional impact:

  • Zero falls recorded during the 12-week programme period
  • 85% improvement in functional strength
  • 48% improvement in mobility speed
  • 33% improvement in limb control and coordination
  • 22% increase in cognitive engagement
  • 10% improvement in MMSE cognitive scores

Reef Cowell completed the entire pilot programme free of charge in his own time. Due to the overwhelming success of the initiative and the enthusiasm shown by residents, he now continues to volunteer at Eastham Care Home  every Thursday evening, delivering weekly strengthening and movement classes for the group.

The programme highlights the powerful impact that targeted physical activity can have on older adults’ health, independence, and quality of life. By combining professional physiotherapy expertise with personalised, supportive sessions, Eastham Care Home  has created a model of care that delivers real, measurable outcomes.

Eastham Care Home remains committed to innovative wellbeing initiatives that enhance safety, independence, and quality of life, ensuring residents continue to live active, confident, and fulfilling lives.
