Residents, families, staff, and members of the local community came together at Windmill House Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, on 8 May 2026 to celebrate VE Day with a garden party filled with music, remembrance, and togetherness.
The special event began with a respectful two-minute silence, followed by a prayer and speech from Reverend Michael to honour the sacrifices made by servicemen and civilians during the war and to celebrate the peace that followed.
Guests were then entertained by live music from The Swing Tones, who performed classic wartime favourites throughout the morning. Residents and visitors also enjoyed a beautifully prepared buffet created by Head Chef Chris and Kitchen Assistant Skye, before an afternoon of karaoke fun led by singer Sally, who encouraged everyone to join in with singing and dancing.
Lifestyle Coordinator Steph said Windmill House proudly celebrates VE Day every year to remember those who fought in the war and to honour the people who lived through those difficult times together.
The atmosphere throughout the day was joyful and uplifting, with staff dressing in authentic 1940s-inspired outfits, residents waving flags, and smiles shared across the home from morning until evening. The sunny weather added to the occasion.
Family members and community visitors praised the event, with one resident’s daughter commenting: “Could not have picked a better day. The weather was beautiful and there were lots of smiling faces.”
Another supporter added: “Looks like a great day as always, lots of happy faces,” while another commented: “This looks great — well done Windmill.”
One of the standout moments of the celebration was seeing the entire home community come together to mark such an important historical occasion in a meaningful and heartfelt way.
