As part of the Runwood Homes Group weekly Monday Memories initiative, residents at Windmill House Care Home have been sharing treasured stories from their lives, and this week we are delighted to celebrate the extraordinary life of Yvonne Davidson, who recently marked the incredible milestone of 105 years.

Born in October 1920 in India, Yvonne’s life has been one of adventure, resilience, and remarkable experiences across continents. With a French mother and British father, Yvonne moved to France as a baby to live with her aunt before later attending boarding school in Dorset from the age of six.

After completing her education, Yvonne returned to India before eventually settling in England during the Second World War. During the war, she proudly served in the Land Army, working on a farm where she cared for cows and delivered milk. It was there that she met her first husband, a farm manager, and the couple married during wartime.

Together, they built a family and welcomed three children: son John in 1944, daughter Elizabeth in 1949, and daughter Suzanne in 1956. In 1953, Yvonne’s aunt purchased the family a farm in Norfolk, where they built many happy memories. Following the passing of her first husband in 1972, Yvonne remarried Bill in 1974, and the pair embarked on exciting travels across Europe in their camper van, embracing adventure together.

Yvonne has always lived life to the fullest. She served as chairwoman of the Women’s Institute, enjoyed playing bridge, loved horse riding and hunting, and found great joy in gardening. Her favourite memories include caring for horses and other animals, as well as travelling extensively across Europe, India, America, and Africa.

A talented linguist, Yvonne spoke French, English, German, and Hindi, and even now she can recall words and phrases from each language. She treasures her many photo albums and delights in sharing stories and memories with those around her.

When asked what advice she would give to her younger self, Yvonne’s response was beautifully simple:
“Enjoy life!”

At Windmill House, Yvonne continues to inspire residents and staff alike with her warmth, wisdom, and extraordinary life experiences. Her story is a wonderful reminder of the importance of cherishing memories and embracing every chapter of life.
