Eastham Care Home Shortlisted for National Activity Award

Residents and staff at Eastham Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, are celebrating after the home was shortlisted as a finalist in the Active Lives category at the 2027 National Activity Awards, run by NAPA (National Activity Providers Association).

The nomination recognises the remarkable culture of movement and physical activity that Eastham has built for its residents, working closely with qualified physiotherapist Reef Cowell, who has volunteered his time at the home for over a year. Together, the team and Reef have introduced Reeflex strengthening and falls-prevention classes twice a week, alongside dance and exercise sessions, walking groups and a resident-led ‘wish list’ designed to help residents achieve their dreams, however big or small.

The impact has been significant with residents reporting genuine improvements in strength, confidence and independence. One of the standout examples is resident of Eastham care home, Harry. With nutritional support and physiotherapy from Reef, Harry regained his strength and, in May 2026, at 98 years old, completed a wing walk at Duxford. He broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest male to complete a wing walk and raised over £10,000 for a children’s cancer charity.

Harry, resident of Eastham care home said: “When I first came to Eastham, I never imagined I’d be doing half the things I do now. Staying active every day has made me feel stronger, more like myself again, and it’s given me the confidence to believe I could still achieve things at my age. The wing walk was proof of that, it was one of the best days of my life, and I never thought at 99 I’d still be finding new things to look forward to. I’m not finished yet either, I’ve got my sights set on the Climbing the O2 and a flight in a Spitfire next!”

Being shortlisted for the NAPA Active Lives Award has itself been a huge highlight for Eastham, providing recognition for the difference this work has made to residents’ lives and acknowledging the efforts of the team and Reef on a national stage.

Eastham Care Home and Reef Cowell will attend a finalist interview with NAPA on Wednesday 16th September 2026 as part of the final judging process for the award.
