Sandcastles and Smiles Bring the Seaside to Residents at Loganberry Lodge

Residents at Loganberry Lodge Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, enjoyed a unique seaside-inspired experience, as the home’s Lifestyle Coordinator, Naomi, brought the beach directly to those cared for in bed through a special activity called Sandcastles & Smiles.

The initiative was created to ensure that residents who are cared for in bed could still enjoy engaging, hands-on activities and experience the joy and familiarity of a traditional day at the seaside.

Designed as a meaningful sensory experience, the activity saw Naomi fill a large tuff tray with play sand and gather buckets, spades and beach toys before visiting residents on a one-to-one basis. Together, they built sandcastles while listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean, creating a relaxing and nostalgic atmosphere that sparked smiles and fond memories.

Naomi Cranmer, Lifestyle Coordinator at Loganberry Lodge, said: “This is one of the reasons I love my job. I get to give our wonderful residents fun and entertaining activities that bring a smile to their face. That’s what it’s all about.”

The activity was warmly received by residents and families alike. Resident Margaret commented: “Thank you so much for this. I didn’t think I’d be building a sandcastle from the comfort of my bed – a delightful surprise.”

Family members also praised the initiative, with one relative saying: “This is so wonderful, such a great idea. Thank you for doing this for my mum.”

Another visitor added: “Such a simple but effective idea, well done! Everyone looks so pleased.”

The event highlights Loganberry Lodge’s commitment to providing meaningful, person-centred activities that enrich residents’ lives, encourage engagement and create joyful moments, regardless of individual mobility needs.

By bringing the beach experience indoors, Loganberry Lodge demonstrated that creativity, compassion and thoughtful planning can help make special memories and brighten residents’ days in the simplest of ways.
