Ashwood Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, recently hosted a heartwarming intergenerational celebration to mark resident Dorrie’s 90th birthday, bringing together residents, family members, and students from a local learning disability college for a truly special day.

The celebration was organised following Dorrie’s own wish for a small gathering, where she asked if she could celebrate her milestone birthday with tea, cake, and a sing-along. The home embraced her request and turned it into a joyful event filled with music, laughter, games, and meaningful connections.

Students from the local college attended alongside their tutors, joining residents and Dorrie’s family members to create a warm, inclusive atmosphere. Guests enjoyed listening to music, singing together, playing games, and sharing tea and cake, making the occasion a memorable experience for all involved.

The importance of the celebration went beyond marking a milestone birthday. It represented the value of intergenerational engagement, helping to build understanding, relationships, and shared experiences between young people and older generations.

The atmosphere throughout the event was described as truly heartwarming, with “lots of love in the air.” One student shared that it was one of the best days of his life, while another said how special it felt to celebrate a 90th birthday having just celebrated his own 18th.

A standout moment from the day included student Freddy, who was so inspired by the experience that he is now organising a future garden party at Ashwood Care Home for his class and the residents, continuing the spirit of connection and community.

This celebration reflects Ashwood Care Home’s commitment to person-centred care, meaningful relationships, and creating joyful, inclusive experiences that enrich the lives of residents and the wider community.dorrie90th Wellbeing Ashwood
