Residents from Windle Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, recently enjoyed a heartwarming and adventurous outing to the ice rink at Riverside Leisure Centre, where they experienced the joy of ice skating together.
The trip took place following discussions during the home’s monthly residents’ meeting, where residents share ideas for fun and exciting outings. The suggestion of an ice-skating trip quickly captured everyone’s imagination.
The outing proved particularly meaningful for some residents. Giovanna shared that ice skating had been a lifelong dream.
“It was so much fun, living my dream of going ice skating. I told my niece I always wanted to try ice skating,” she said.
Kitty also expressed her appreciation for the opportunity:
“Thank you, ladies, for such a fun experience. I didn’t think I could ever get to go ice skating again.”
Margaret was equally enthusiastic about the day, saying simply:
“I can’t wait to go again.”
For Margaret, the experience also brought back fond memories of taking her children to ice hockey games and the special moments when they were allowed to step onto the ice together after the match.
One of the highlights of the day was watching the home’s bus driver, Bill, take Giovanna around the ice. Staff and residents were amazed at how quickly he glided across the rink, and seeing the joy on Giovanna’s face as she skated.
The atmosphere throughout the outing was full of laughter and excitement, with residents and staff alike smiling from ear to ear. The trip demonstrated how meaningful activities can help residents reconnect with treasured memories while creating new experiences together.
The team at Windle Court looks forward to planning more resident-led outings in the future, ensuring every resident has the opportunity to enjoy new adventures and fulfil lifelong dreams.
