Residents, families and team members at Lower Meadow Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes group, came together to celebrate Onam.
For the occasion, Lower Meadow Care Home and its garden were beautifully decorated, creating a vibrant setting for an afternoon filled with activities. The celebrations included a colourful floral Pookkalam, games and Thiruvathirakali, a traditional group dance performed by women during Onam festivities.
Food also played an important part in the celebrations, with residents, relatives and team members enjoying a selection of vegetarian curries and traditional delicacies served on fresh banana leaves as part of a Sadya, the traditional Onam feast.
The afternoon was warmly received by residents, who described it as a “brilliant afternoon” and said that “everything was beautiful.”
Cheryl, daughter-in-law of a resident at Lower Meadow, said: “It was a great afternoon. A lot of effort was made, and it was a wonderful celebration.”
For the team at Lower Meadow, the event was also an important opportunity to celebrate the different cultures represented within the home.
Rachel, Home Manager at Lower Meadow, said: “Our home is always known for our celebration of diversity and inclusion, and we feel it is always a priority. A lot of our team members are away from their homelands and families, so to bring a bit of their home and culture within our home is truly special and something that we will continue to do.’’
The event reflects Lower Meadow Care Home’s ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion and creating a welcoming home where the individual cultures and traditions of everyone within its community can be recognised and celebrated.
