Families and staff at Bennett Lodge care home, part of Runwood Homes group, recently came together for a dementia awareness session during a relatives’ meeting.
Using dementia simulation goggles and gloves, participants experienced first-hand how changes in vision, touch and perception can affect everyday tasks. The immersive session helped attendees see the world through the eyes of someone living with dementia.
One family member commented, “I didn’t know this is what people with dementia can see.”
The training was designed for both staff and family members, helping them gain practical insight into how dementia can affect a person’s senses.
Many were surprised by how difficult simple tasks became and commented that they had never realised the challenges people with dementia can experience. The activity left participants with a greater sense of compassion and understanding.
Events like this continue to strengthen relationships between families and staff, ensuring everyone works together to provide the very best support for people living with dementia.
