Rosedale Court Residents Mark VE Day 80th Anniversary with Pride and Celebration

Residents, staff, family members, and local dignitaries came together on Thursday 8th May for a poignant and joyful celebration at Rosedale Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The day began with three proud residents , Lenny, Steve, and Colin, representing Rosedale Court at a wreath-laying service hosted by the Royal British Legion. Accompanied by lifestyle coordinator Louise Healy, they joined the wider community and witnessed a stunning Spitfire flypast at Holy Trinity Church, a powerful moment of remembrance and pride.

The commemorations continued back at Rosedale Court, where the home hosted a vibrant garden party filled with music, laughter, and community spirit. Highlights included resident Steven delivering a heartfelt reading of a VE Day poem and 101-year-old Ivy moving guests to tears with her rendition of ‘We’ll Meet Again.’

The event was made even more special by the presence of local dignitaries, including Madam Chair of Rochford District Council Cllr Sarah-Jane Page, Cllr Richard Linden, and Cllr Marianne Vernon from Rayleigh Town Council.

“It was absolutely my pleasure to come and support you and your beautiful residence in commemorating the day,” said Cllr Sarah-Jane Page. “Lovely to meet Lenny, Steve, and Colin at the service. Your celebrations did the community proud for this special day.”

Family members also shared their joy, with Vicky sharing, “My dad had a lovely day. He was so happy to go out into the community for the wreath-laying service and then have special guests from the council turn up to the party.”

The atmosphere throughout the day was electric – happy, loud, emotional – everything a great party should be. The celebrations gave residents the chance to be part of the wider community and reminisce about an important time in history. The day served as a fitting tribute to those who fought for peace, as well as a reminder of the strength and spirit that continues to live on in the Rosedale Court community.
