Silvanna Court Residents Celebrate ‘All Creatures Great and Small’

Silvanna Court Care Home, part of  Runwood Homes Group, embraced the joy and comfort of animal companionship throughout May with its monthly dignity theme: “All Creatures Great and Small.”

The initiative, inspired by a monthly theme, was brought to life through a variety of engaging and therapeutic animal encounters. Baby chicks, ducklings, rabbits, and friendly dogs visited the home, creating a lovely atmosphere and sensory stimulation for residents.

Pauline Connell, a resident at Silvanna Court, was especially moved by the experience. Debby Lifestyle Coordinator at the home shared that:
“She just loved holding the baby chickens. Staff member Kelly raises them at home and brings them in regularly.  The residents look forward to their visits so much!”

Resident Jean Cooper reflected nostalgically, saying, “It’s just lovely to see a rabbit again. It reminds me of growing up. My father always had rabbits. During the war, you needed a license to breed them!”

Another resident, Ceri, added: “Oh how wonderfully cute, aren’t they marvelous little things!”

In addition to in-home animal visits, Lin Howlett, a relative of a resident, regularly brings in her puppy, who has become a cherished part of the Silvanna community. Residents also enjoy encountering dogs in the park during the Home’s Runwood Ramblers walks.

The initiative has had a profound impact on residents’ wellbeing.
“Animal interactions like these are extremely therapeutic,” said Leah. “They stimulate senses like touch, sight, and smell and promote mental wellness.

The atmosphere throughout the month was vibrant and joyful. There were lively conversations throughout the home, as residents shared stories and fond memories.

When asked about the highlight of the month, Deby said:
“The highlight was simply seeing the pure joy and happiness of our residents. It’s moments like these that make everything worthwhile.”
