Residents and staff at Elizabeth House Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group,, were recently treated to an unforgettable musical experience when internationally acclaimed Nigerian saxophonist Mike Aremu visited on 3rd October 2025. Known for his chart-topping singles and headline performances at venues such as London’s Barbican and the Excel Centre, Mike brought the joy of jazz to Elizabeth House as part of his nationwide initiative to uplift care home communities through music.

Mike, who began playing saxophone at the age of eight, performed a selection of old classics, contemporary favourites, and original pieces. His visit formed part of an ongoing partnership with the local council and Elizabeth House to introduce unique and enriching entertainment for residents.

Many staff commented on the electric atmosphere, saying that the sound of the saxophone travelled throughout the home. Residents were singing, dancing, and engaging with one another and with Mike.

The response from residents was equally enthusiastic.
Maureen said, “It was so amazing to hear the saxophone.”
Jean added, “I can’t wait for the jazz man to come back again!”

Wellbeing staff and care teams joined residents for the event, enjoying the lively and emotional connection that music brought to the day. Music has long been recognised as a powerful tool in care settings, promoting brain activity, sparking memories, and offering mood boosts that contribute to emotional wellbeing and inclusion.

This special visit came about after residents expressed a desire for more live music experiences. In response, the home reached out to the council for support in arranging entertainment, resulting in the booking of Mike Aremu.

One standout moment was witnessing the residents interact not only with Mike but with each other — smiling, laughing, and reminiscing. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of music to connect, heal, and uplift.
