Residents and staff at The Mill House Care Home part of the Runwood Homes Group, have come together to cultivate a shared love of nature with the launch of a new Gardening Club, bringing purpose, joy, and connection to all involved.
Together, the group planted a variety of seeds including tomatoes, nasturtiums, and wildflowers, marking the start of what promises to be a flourishing community project.
Residents took on different roles during the session, some filled planters with soil, others carefully sowed seeds, while experienced gardeners shared advice and fond memories of tending to their own gardens over the years. The group also enjoyed reading gardening books and magazines, adding an educational element to the activity.
One resident, Barbara, shared her fond memories of gardening:
“I used to grow everything in my garden, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, peas, the lot!”
The seedlings have since been placed in a bright spot in the home’s conservatory, where they can be seen and enjoyed by everyone. In just over a week, the seeds have already begun to sprout, sparking excitement among residents as they watch their progress and prepare for the next stage of repotting.
The idea for the Gardening Club was inspired by a resident who expressed a desire to bring people together to transform the home’s patio into a vibrant, blooming space. Since its launch, the club has already encouraged further engagement, including two minibus trips to a local garden centre.
The atmosphere during the sessions has been described as calm, caring, and informative, with many residents finding joy in both the activity itself and the daily progress of their plants.
The Mill House looks forward to continuing the Gardening Club and seeing both plants and community spirit flourish in the months ahead.
