Eastham Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, has been recognised for its impactful Black History Month initiative, which was recently featured on the My Home Life blog. The project, titled “Learn from Black History”, celebrated the achievements and contributions of Black individuals throughout history and explored how these legacies continue to shape modern life and care practices today.
Throughout October 2025, residents and staff at Eastham Care Home, collaborated to create an engaging and educational display that encouraged reflection, inclusion, and conversation. The display highlighted key historical figures and moments, helping to foster understanding and appreciation within the Eastham community.
Home Manager Karolyn Sisto expressed her pride in the team’s efforts, noting the positive response from everyone involved:
“This initiative created opportunities for people to share stories, reflect on history, and connect over how these contributions continue to influence our lives and care practices today.”
The Black History Month initiative has had a lasting impact within the home. It has promoted inclusion by recognising and honouring the experiences of Black residents, staff, and visitors, helping everyone feel valued and respected. It has also enhanced person-centred care by increasing cultural awareness among staff, enabling them to deliver more compassionate and individualised support.
In addition, the project has encouraged intergenerational connections and meaningful discussions about the contributions that have shaped healthcare and society. It also serves as a powerful example of best practice in equality, diversity, and inclusion within the care sector.
A highlight of the month was Eastham Care Home ‘s feature and interview on the My Home Life blog, which celebrated the home’s dedication to fostering inclusion and understanding across generations.
“Quality care means recognising the whole person, including their cultural identity and heritage,” said a spokesperson. “This display has enriched our community and strengthened relationships across generations.”
Eastham Care Home is proud to celebrate the importance of cultural heritage and unity, demonstrating how inclusion and understanding lie at the heart of exceptional care.
