Chelmunds Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, residents recently enjoyed a festive and heart-warming trip to a local garden centre. The outing took place on the 19th of November and brought together two Lifestyle Coordinators and five residents, including a new resident who was delighted to join the group for her first community trip.
The visit was planned to help residents enjoy the Christmas displays, beautiful decorations and a seasonal atmosphere, however it was the animals that stole the show. The ladies spent much of the morning happily watching rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and fish, which brought smiles and sparked lively conversations.
“We walked around the garden centre looking at all the Christmas decorations, then spent time with the animals. Afterwards we sat down for tea and scones, which everyone loved. All the residents were chatting away having a great time,” said Kera, Lifestyle Coordinator.
Residents shared how much they loved the trip, expressing how nice it was to get out and spend quality time with their friends. The atmosphere from the moment they boarded the bus was filled with warmth and festive excitement. Wrapped up in scarves and gloves, the group listened to Christmas music on the journey and happily chatted throughout the day. When they returned home, the residents continued reminiscing together, discussing their favourite moments from the outing.
Taking residents out into the community is an important part of life at Chelmunds Court. “These trips give residents something to look forward to and provide a wonderful sense of freedom,” Kera explained. “Many of them enjoy dressing up for the outings and sharing stories of their day when they get back.”
The idea for this trip came from the home’s regular visits to the garden centre, a favourite destination due to its proximity and familiar atmosphere. This time, with the Christmas displays in full sparkle, the visit felt even more special and added an extra touch of festive joy.
A standout moment from the day came when one of the residents, who adores children, was approached by a young boy. He took her hand, and the two walked together, chatting about the animals and sharing what they hoped for at Christmas. When the boy said he wished for a bike, the resident replied that her wish was “to be with the people I love” – a touching moment that stayed with everyone.
The trip was a wonderful success, bringing joy, companionship and seasonal cheer to all involved. Chelmunds Court looks forward to creating many more special experiences for residents in the coming months.
