Residents at Evelyn May House, part of the Runwood Homes Group, were delighted to welcome much-loved therapy dog Hettie for another heartwarming visit, bringing smiles, comfort and meaningful interaction to everyone involved.

Hettie, who visits the home twice a month, spent the morning with residents, staff and family members, offering companionship and encouraging both mental and physical stimulation through gentle interaction and affection.

Dawn, Lifestyle Coordinator at Evelyn May House, said: “We welcomed Hettie into the home to visit our residents, who absolutely adore her. She always brings so many smiles, and it is wonderful to see the positive impact she has on everyone.”

The therapy dog sessions were introduced following requests from residents and family members who felt animal interaction would benefit wellbeing across the home. Since then, Hettie has become a firm favourite among residents, many of whom enjoy sharing memories of pets they once owned.

Resident Sandy commented: “It’s lovely to see Hettie the dog visiting us and walking around the home.”

The visits are especially important for residents living with dementia, as interaction with therapy animals can help spark memories, encourage communication and provide reassurance and comfort. During this latest visit, one touching moment saw a resident with limited eyesight cuddling and stroking Hettie while fondly reminiscing about a beloved dog they once had.

The atmosphere throughout the morning was warm and joyful, with residents gathering to give Hettie plenty of attention and affection. Staff described seeing residents’ faces “light up with smiles” as soon as Hettie entered the room.

At Evelyn May House, creating meaningful experiences and supporting residents’ emotional wellbeing remains at the heart of daily life, and visits from Hettie continue to provide comfort, connection and happiness to all who attend.
