A 90-year-old resident from Carolyne House Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, has achieved an extraordinary lifelong ambition after successfully climbing over The O2 in her wheelchair, surrounded by friends, family and supporters cheering her on every step of the way.
Betty completed the remarkable challenge on 7 May 2026 after more than a year of planning and determination. Accompanied by her son Martyn, Lifestyle Coordinator Charlotte, and bus driver Rod, Betty tackled the iconic London attraction with support from The O2 staff.
The emotional moment marked the fulfilment of one of Betty’s biggest wishes.
Charlotte, Lifestyle Coordinator at Carolyne House, said:
“Betty is a real thrill seeker and has always loved adventurous activities. Since coming to Carolyne House, we’ve encouraged that adventurous spirit by taking her on rollercoasters, ice skating and bike riding. But she wanted to do something really big, and asked if she could climb The O2. It took a year of planning, but seeing her achieve it was absolutely incredible.”
Residents and members of the community were full of praise for Betty’s achievement, describing it as “Amazing,” “What an achievement,” and “Incredible.”
Friends from the home travelled to watch Betty complete the climb, creating a celebratory atmosphere throughout the day. Despite the challenge, Betty embraced every moment with confidence and excitement.
One of the standout moments of the day was seeing Betty receive her medal at the finish while surrounded by applause and celebration from her supporters.
Special recognition was also given to Carolyne House bus driver Rod, whose dedication played a major role in making the experience possible. Rod arrived at the home at 6.30am before driving through rush hour traffic to ensure the group arrived at The O2 on time. He then joined the climb itself, helping support Betty throughout the experience, taking photographs and encouraging the group.
To celebrate Betty’s achievement, Rod also surprised her with a teddy bear at the end of the climb.
The team at Carolyne House praised Ron for going above and beyond, and are so grateful to have such a supportive bus driver.
For Betty, the achievement was far more than just a climb, it was proof that adventure and ambition have no age limit.
